The science behind making fake blood

Did you know that fake blood is used to test how well surgical masks perform in a hospital setting?

Most people don’t, but UniSA has artificial blood making down to a fine art.

UniSA senior technical officer and senior research engineer Dr Natalya Schmerl, based in the Future Industries Institute, explains how the University uses artificial blood to ensure masks are 100 per cent safe for frontline health workers.

The UniSA facility is financially supported by the State Government.
