Founded in 1886, the university welcomes more than 12,000 students from all 50 states and 90 countries. The Laramie campus stands at an altitude of 2200 metres above sea level. Its geographical location between two mountain ranges, Rocky Mountains and the Wyoming Range, means the University offers a wide variety of academic and lifestyle opportunities. With a popular and varied outdoor program, from extreme alpine sports to the simple day hike, Wyoming is also renowned for its athletics department, offering 17 NCAA-sanctioned sports and completes at the Division I level in football. There are over 270 student clubs which is sure to attract all types of outdoor and sporting enthusiasts. As a UW student, you have unrestricted access to our two campus gyms, Half Acre and Corbett and nearly all sporting events at no cost.

The Wyoming Union is located in the heart of the campus and often hosts year-round cultural and recreational activities. An International Coffee Hour is offered every Friday. This is a wonderful way to meet other international students, and it’s free!

There are low student/teacher ratios at Wyoming meaning that classes are small, and students get direct access to faculty support. Wyoming’s College of Business is AACSB accredited.

The town of Laramie is located an hour away from Cheyenne, the capital of the state of Wyoming Cheyenne. The town is situated at an altitude of 2,200m above sea level, on the Laramie River between two mountain ranges; the Snowy Range and Laramie Range. The Snowy Range Mountain Ski Area and Medicine Bow National Forest are a 40-minute drive to the west of the town. Although Laramie has a small permanent population of 32,000 people, it attracts a modest number of sporting and outdoor enthusiasts from across the United States, offering a long list of activities, namely skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, hiking, hunting and fishing.

The United States of America, commonly known as the United States, US, USA or simply America, is a country in North America. Most of the country is located between Canada and Mexico, but also includes places such as Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The capital is Washington D.C., but the most populous city is New York City.

At 9.8 million square kilometres, the US is the world's third or fourth largest country by total area, only slightly smaller than the entire continent of Europe. It is the world's third most populous country, with an estimated population of over 327 million people.

You're likely already familiar with some aspects of the US such as cross-country road trips, hearty food portions and the massive scale of everything. It is near impossible to run out of things to discover in this country! Every one of the 50 states is incredibly different, so depending where you go within the US you might feel you’re in a different country. This a very diverse nation, as people immigrate from all over the world, bringing in different religions, races, cultural traditions, and political beliefs.

You can visit one of over 35,000 museums, check out the major cities, visit small towns and farmlands, and explore the massive and beautiful national parks such as Yellowstone and Zion. You could also visit neighbouring Canada or Mexico if you want to travel more. The US is a hub of industry and culture for nearly every aspect of modern life, so having the chance to study here can really expand your networks and open you up to future possibilities abroad.

Did you know?

A small community in the Grand Canyon still receives their mail via mule service as motorized delivery is not possible. The service runs six days a week with at least two mule trains daily so that animals and riders don’t have to make the trip down to the village and back without an overnight stop. Believe it or not, scientists at the Utah State University have proven at millimetre scale that the topography of the state of Kansas is actually flatter than a pancake!

Online and other classes that are administered through the Outreach School are available for exchange.  They can be identified by their section number.  For example, in ENGL 1010-40, the section number is 40. 

Any section number 40-89 is a class offered through the Outreach School and is not included in the exchange agreement. 

Section 50 classes are offered on a campus in a different city, so exchange and study abroad students cannot enrol in these classes. 
Students must have the equivalent of a 2.75 GPA or above.  Some university programs require a 3.0 GPA for admission.

Courses at US partner universities are generally valued at 3 credits each. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 12 credits per semester, equal to 13.5 UniSA units. 15 credits are equivalent to 18 UniSA units. 
 
Therefore we recommend that: 

• 15 US credits = 5 US courses (@ 3 credits each) is equivalent to 18 UniSA units 
• 12 US credits = 4 US courses (@ 3 credits each) is equivalent to 13.5 UniSA units 

University of Wyoming accepts the following test scores: 

• TOEFL internet-based minimum requirement is 71 for most majors 
• TOEFL internet-based minimum requirement for Engineering is 80 
• IELTS minimum requirement is 6 for most majors and 6.5 for Engineering 
• CET minimum requirement is 4 for undergraduates and 6 for graduates (Chinese speakers only)

Restrictions: Exchange students are not permitted to enrol in classes within the Departments of Law, Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, or Master of Business Administration. 

University of Wyoming offer airport pick up from Brees Field Airport, Laramie (LAR), via Sky West Airlines only to the UW campus.  
 
However, if you fly into Denver International Airport (DIA), you may take the Groome Shuttle Service to the UW Washakie Centre at your own cost. Please see here to make your reservation.

There are two types of on-campus housing are available for Exchange and Study Abroad students, Residence Halls (Dormitories) and Apartments. To learn more about these, as well as costs and dining plans, visit the Residence Life and Dining Services web page.  To apply for a Residence Hall or Apartment, click on the housing contract link under your Checklist on WyoWeb.  The online application can be found there. You will not be permitted to apply for housing until you have been admitted to the University of Wyoming and are enrolled in at least one class.  Housing offer letters are sent only your UW student email. It is important for you to check your UW student email regularly after you submit your housing application.

As an exchange partner with the University of South Australia, you do not have to pay tuition fees to University of Wyoming, instead you will pay tuition as you would normally at UniSA. Travel and living expenses are at your own cost. The table below gives an indication of costs you will incur:
