Post-Study Work arrangements were introduced by the Department of Home Affairs (Home Affairs) on 23 March 2013.

Students who graduate with an Australian Bachelors, Masters or a Doctoral degree and meet the other eligibility criteria will have access to the Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV). Please see the Department of Home Affairs website for eligibility requirements.

The duration of the Post-Study Work Visa you are able to apply for will depend on the degree you attain, as follows:

  • Bachelor (including honours) graduates will be eligible to apply for a two* year post-study work visa
  • Master by Coursework and Master by Research graduates will be eligible to apply for a three* year post-study work visa
  • PhD graduates will be eligible to apply for a six year post-study work visa

*From 1 July 2023 until mid 2024, graduates with select Bachelor or select Master degrees will be eligible for a visa with a further two year validity if their qualification is listed on the Department of Education's 'Eligible Qualifications List (EQL)'.

Students may also be eligible to apply for a Second Post-Study Work stream visa for a further one year duration, if you have lived, worked and/or studied in a regional area (South Australia) while holding your first Post-Study Work Visa, and your first Post-Study Work Visa was granted on the basis of a degree or higher from an Australian instituition located in a regional area. Please see the Department of Home Affairs website for eligibility requirements.

The Post-Study Work arrangements is an additional stream in the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa. You may apply for the temporary graduate visa through either the Post-Study Work stream or the Graduate Work stream provided you meet the specific eligibility requirements.

The Department of Home Affairs has temporarily changed the requirements for a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa for those who have been impacted by Covid-19 travel restrictions:

Online study undertaken outside Australia (prior to 25 November 2023) as a result of Covid-19 travel restrictions will count towards the Australian Study Requirement (ASR) for existing student visa holders. Note - online study outside Australia is counted from the time of the student visa grant.

From 25 November 2023, all Temporary Graduate visa applicants need to be in Australia at time of lodgment.

Please see the Department of Home Affairs website for the current information, which is subject to change.
