Multiliteracies for addressing disadvantage in senior school science

Student looking through a microscope, shutterstock 1841011750Many students from disadvantage backgrounds fail to develop the linguistic precision and symbolic representational dexterity needed to comprehend and communicate senior school science concepts.

This project develops discipline-specific pedagogies in senior physics, chemistry and biology to improve the engagement and achievement of disadvantaged students.

These pedagogies aim to improve critical comprehension and creation of verbal and visual representations, enabling students to actively build understanding of progressively more complex scientific concepts and demonstrate this in examinations.

Pedagogies ‘infusing’ multiliteracies in senior school science will be developed to improve access to science-based pathways for these students.
