Officially opened by Professor Anthony Elliott, Executive Director of the Hawke EU Centre for Mobilities, Migrations and Cultural Transformations, Europe Day commemorates 9th May 1950, when the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, to help maintain peaceful relations between European countries. It is an occasion to remember the historical context in which the Union was created, the progress that has been made, the difficulties it has had to overcome, and the original aims of the European project.
Guest speakers included Mr Jean-Christophe Trentinella, Director of Alliance Française in Adelaide and member of the Hawke EU Centre Advisory Board and Mr Adrian Vatovec, the inaugural Honorary Consul of Slovenia for South Australia. Both speakers reflected on the strong ties Australia has forged with the European Union and more specifically, France and Slovenia.
