UniSA design students go global with professional development

A group of staff and students from the University of South Australia recently travelled overseas to participate in Singapore Design Week – one of Asia’s largest and most influential design festivals. It was the perfect opportunity for students to gain industry insights given the event is known for its championing of design thinking and global leadership.

This study tour was coordinated for students in a range of degrees from the University’s School of Art, Architecture and Design and has become a yearly event in the School’s calendar. The study tour aims to highlight the value of ongoing global partnerships and offers students the kind of skills and professional development that will help foster international careers.

As well as being part of Singapore Design Week, students also get the chance to undertake visits to design offices, manufacturing facilities, participate in a product design workshop at a Singapore school and attend the Singapore Furniture Fair. Students also get the opportunity to be part of the University’s exhibition at SingaPlural 2019 – an international event held at the National Design Centre.

As the only Australian university exhibitor at the event, students from the University of South Australia have the unique opportunity to experience first-hand the latest industry trends and play a role in crafting an installation specifically for the event. It’s the kind of experience on offer across the University’s highly specialised design degrees which offer students skills and techniques they can apply directly in their creative industry careers.

Students in degrees such as the Bachelor of Design (Product), Bachelor of Design (Illustration and Animation), and Bachelor of Interior Architecture are able to take the knowledge they’ve learnt and practised in custom-built workshops and design studios on campus and apply them to the world stage.

This international exposure is a clear example of how the University delivers practical teaching and experience across its degrees. Associate Professor Jane Lawrence, Head of School: Art, Architecture and Design says “AAD student involvement in the UniSA Naturation Exhibition as part of Singapore Design Week activities provided AAD students with an exceptional learning experience where they were able to engage and network with internationally leading practitioners, industry and UniSA alumni during their two week NCP funded study tour. The exhibition and associated Singapore Design Week activities and events provided an accessible and authentic setting in which our students could identify and contextualise future global career opportunities and destinations.”
