Artists On The Inside presents artwork created by adults incarcerated in South Australia’s prisons. The works allow contributors to participate in the community both as prisoners and as artists, using art as the medium to create and share stories. In taking on the role of artists, prisoners challenge themselves to think differently about their relationships with the self, the community and culture.

This exhibition provides an opportunity for prisoners to express creative talent and vision, and for visitors to reflect on their assumptions about prisoners and what can be achieved within institutions. The 2021 Exhibition includes works from six of South Australia’s prisons with artworks covering a range of themes from deeply reflective to humorous.

Visual artworks use a variety of mediums including paint, sculpture and applique and are accompanied by a collection of written works under the title Words from the Inside. All entries have been judged by a panel of arts industry professionals.

Visitors are invited to participate in this process by voting for your favourite artwork and leaving a comment. People’s Choice awards and public comments will be sent to participants.
