Who am I, really? The joy of discovering who we really are.

Hear one of Australia’s most respected social psychologists, Hugh Mackay AO, talk about his new book The Inner Self.  He explains the differences between our ‘inner’ and ‘social’ selves and, in the process, takes us to the heart of what it means to be human.

In this conversation, he will examine the ways we try to hide from the truth about ourselves - both as individuals and as human beings. Hugh explores our 'top 20' hiding places - from addiction to materialism, nostalgia to victimhood. He will describe the psychological freedom we enjoy when we finally face that most searching question of all: ‘Who am I, really?’ 

Hugh will also draw on his new novel, The Question of Love, to add a more intimate dimension to his exploration of the mysteries of human love.

HUGH MACKAY AO
PSYCHOLOGIST, SOCIAL RESEARCHER, AUTHOR

Hugh Mackay AO is a social psychologist, researcher and bestselling author of 21 books, including What Makes Us Tick, The Good Life and Australia Reimagined. His latest non-fiction book, The Inner Self, will be published concurrently with his eighth novel, The Question of Love.

He has had a 60-year career in social research, and was also a weekly newspaper columnist for over 25 years. Among many honorary appointments, he has been deputy chairman of the Australia Council for the Arts, chairman of trustees of Sydney Grammar School, the inaugural chairman of the ACT government’s Community Inclusion Board and an Honorary Professor at Macquarie, Wollongong and Charles Sturt universities. He is currently a patron of the Asylum Seekers Centre and the new patron of the ACT’s Havelock Housing.

Hugh is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society and the Royal Society of NSW. In recognition of his pioneering work in social research, he has been awarded honorary doctorates by Charles Sturt, Macquarie, NSW, Western Sydney and Wollongong universities. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2015.

THE HONOURABLE REVEREND DR LYNN ARNOLD AO FAICD

The Honourable Reverend Dr Lynn Arnold AO FAICD is a former Premier of South Australia and a former CEO of World Vision Australia. Prior to his appointment as Premier in 1992, Dr Arnold worked in the Labor Government for 11 years.

He has extensive experience working with World Vision, having also served as Senior Director for World Vision International and World Vision’s Regional Vice-President for Asia and the Pacific.

A long-time member of the United Nations Association of Australia (SA), Dr Arnold has held the positions of State President in South Australia and National Vice-President. 

He was awarded the Order of Australia (AO) in 2004 for his services to Australia through the South Australian Parliament and internationally through the development and humanitarian aid assistance. In 2013, he was ordained Deacon in the Anglican Church and since 2014 has been serving as a Priest in Adelaide. Dr Arnold is also former CEO of Anglicare SA.
