This is the final hour: it can be our finest hour.
We can solve our climate emergency, but we must act now.

The Paris Agreement (2015) was a landmark for humanity – with 195 countries committing to a sustainable future and targets to slow climate change. Christiana Figueres, former UN Secretary for Climate, was one of the principal architects of the most pivotal climate agreement in history; the Paris Agreement. In this talk, she will explain why we must continue to confront the climate crisis head on, with determination and optimism.

She outlines two scenarios for our future: how life on Earth will be by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement climate targets; or how it will look and feel to live in a carbon neutral, regenerative world. These themes are explored in the forthcoming book: The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis, which will be available for purchase from 6pm in the Allan Scott Auditorium.

Christiana Figueres will be in-conversation with Professor Chris Daniels, Director of Cleland Wildlife Park.

INTERNATIONAL LEADER ON GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

Christiana Figueres is a Costa Rican citizen and was the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2010 - 2016.

During her tenure at the UNFCCC, Christiana brought together national and sub-national governments, corporations and activists, financial institutions and NGOs to jointly deliver the historic Paris Agreement on climate change, in which 195 sovereign nations agreed on a collaborative path forward to limit future global warming to well below 2°C, and strive for 1.5°C in order to protect the most vulnerable. For this achievement Christiana has been credited with forging a new brand of collaborative diplomacy, for which she has received multiple awards.

Since then she has continued to serve her one and only boss, the global atmosphere.  She sits on multiple boards and is a founding partner of Global Optimism Ltd., a purpose driven enterprise focused on social and environmental change.  She convenes Mission 2020 and co-chairs the Global Covenant of Mayors.  

She is a graduate of Swarthmore College and the London School of Economics. Together with Tom Rivett-Carnac, she is the co-author of the forthcoming book: The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis.

ADJUNCT PROFESSOR CHRIS DANIELS
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Professor Chris Daniels is Director of Cleland Wildlife Park and holds Adjunct Professorships in Biology at the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide.

In 2018 he was awarded a DSc from the University of Adelaide for 30 years research work into  "The lives of Animals and animals in our lives" . He is also involved in many other environmental leadership activities focused on conserving wildlife and connecting people with nature. 

Chris Daniels is currently a Governor of the World Wildlife Fund, and Patron of the Friends of Woorabinda (Stirling Linear Park), the Marine Discovery Centre, the SA Junior Field Naturalists Society,  among many other board, community and science roles.

Chris has published 9 books, a DVD and over 250 scientific and community publications. Books include Adelaide Nature of a City (2005) and Adelaide Water of a City (2010). Awards for these books include the Whitley Award, and awards from the Planning Institute of Australia, Stormwater Industry and Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. Chris won the South Australian Premiers Science award for communication (2007) and the Medal for natural history from the Field Naturalists Soc SA (2010).
