Fred Hansen is a world expert on transport. He believes that integrating transport planning and urban design is the key to ensuring vibrant communities.

What background does he bring to this perspective?  He chairs the American Public Transport Association's work on sustainability and has been at the forefront of transforming Portland, Oregon into one of the most attractive 'lifestyle' cities in the world.

Adelaide's lifestyle is often praised, but Australia-wide the hot infrastructure topic is urban transport.

Biography

Fred Hansen is renowned for his innovative approach to the provision of public transport and internationally recognised in the field of transport and integrated land use.

As General manger of TriMet for 11 years, the public transport provider for Portland, Fred pursued an ambitious and world-leading public transport strategy for the city transforming it into an international model of a sustainable and integrated system. Portland's transport system demonstrates the broad social, environmental, economic and health benefits of well planned public transport, integrated into the cityscape and the way that people work and live.

The Total Transit System instigated by Fred for TriMet makes the entire transit experience easier and more sustainable. It involves online trip planning, real time bus and train arrival times, accessible from mobile telephones or computers, bus shelters with solar lighting, better customer information, safer street crossings to transport stops and constructing an improved pedestrian network connecting, people, transport, work, leisure and home.

Believing that integrating transport planning and urban design is key to building viable, liveable cities, Fred Hansen speaks widely on these issues, serves on many advisory panels and boards and is presently chairing the American Public Transport Association’s work on sustainability.

Fred Hansen's experience in transport, urban renewal and environmental protection offers much in guiding Adelaide towards developing a dynamic, transport oriented, sustainable city.
