Dale Agius grew up in a world where conversations about social justice weren’t occasional – they were constant. It’s a foundation that naturally paved the way to his role as the South Australian Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People. But behind the title is a lifelong determination to see Aboriginal voices not only heard, but guiding the decisions that will shape generations to come.

Raised in Adelaide’s northern suburbs by a single mother and two strong grandmothers, Dale, a Kaurna, Narungga, Ngadjuri, and Ngarrindjeri man, grew up straddling two worlds.

At home, he was immersed in culture, learning about traditional ways of Aboriginal living and the strength of Aboriginal identity. At school, he encountered the mainstream education system, where the history and experiences of Aboriginal people were rarely reflected. The disparity between worlds sparked a deep awareness of inequality from a young age. He noticed the gaps, from his classmates having access to opportunities that he didn’t, to the absence of Aboriginal voices.

Rather than discouraging him, these experiences ignited his sense of purpose. Initially, Dale didn’t believe higher education was on the cards; however, at age 25, an encouraging conversation with a UniSA academic advisor altered his perspective. Over the decade that followed, Dale studied a double degree in Psychology and Social Science at UniSA’s Magill Campus, balancing full-time work, study, and his role as president at his local football club. After years of determination and sacrifice, he graduated with his head held high in 2023.

Inspired by a family legacy of advocacy and leadership, Dale has dedicated his career to amplifying Aboriginal voices, working across Aboriginal affairs, education, legal rights, and now, government policy. He played a key role in the Indigenous Voice to Parliament in South Australia, something he sees as a lasting legacy and something he is forever proud of.

What Dale values most is the next generation. He finds inspiration in hearing young Aboriginal people share their vision for a united Australia; and as Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, he is working to ensure every Aboriginal child grows up strong in culture and surrounded by opportunity. With each role he takes on, Dale is giving his all to building a better South Australia where respect and equity are central to how we both live and lead.
