Sophie ComberThis week more than 1,500 University of South Australia students will have their degrees conferred, with two full days of graduation ceremonies, starting on Tuesday at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Among those being recognised for their achievements will be Sophie Comber, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Arts (Writing and Creative Communication).

Sophie’s academic success, combined with her ability to speak Mandarin, will see her begin her career by undertaking a 12 week media internship in Qingdao, China, where Sophie will gain work experience at RedStar magazine.

The internship, which has been arranged through InternChina will see Sophie live with a Chinese family and write articles that promote the coastal city, highlighting events, culture and travel around the area.

It’s an opportunity that Sophie is grateful for, with internships being a path she would encourage other students to pursue in order to gain relevant experience required in forging their future careers.

“Catherine Klimeš, who is managing the Placements & Internships@ UniSA Project, has been so helpful in giving me career advice and helping me research China internship companies,” Sophie says.

“I’d say overseas internships are great in terms of getting real-world experience and global perspective.”

“I can improve my language ability in China, and I also really enjoy Chinese culture - I'm looking forward to Qingdao's teahouses.”

Catherine Klimeš described Internships as invaluable - for students, graduates and employers.

“For students they allow you to explore career pathways and roles in the employment sector, whilst allowing you to build your graduate competencies, experience and confidence.  For graduates, Internships smooth the transition into a chosen occupation,” Catherine Klimeš says.

“Employers like Internships because they offer them the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’. They use Internships to identify talent early, and to confirm their interns are a good fit for their organisation.  Every year thousands of UniSA students undertake Internships. They can be overseas, or in Adelaide.

“Employers – including many UniSA Alumnus – offer opportunities because they understand how valuable they were in helping them establish their own careers.  If you are keen to find out how you can provide an opportunity, please contact: careers@unisa.edu.au we would be delighted to work with you.”
