About the study

UniSA is seeking people with chronic lower back pain to take part in a free 12-week exercise program led by an experienced physiotherapist, which complies with current guidelines for best practice care. 

What is involved?

Part 1: One-on-one session with questionnaires asking about your lower back pain, lifestyle and overall health, abdominal ultrasound and breathing tests.

Part 2: 12 weeks of weekly one-hour sessions with a maximum of three people and modifications to suit individual capacity.

Part 3: One-on-one follow up repeating Part 1 questionnaires and tests.

Part 4: Semi-structured group feedback interviews

Approximate total time 15 hours.

Eligibility requirements

  • Gender: All
  • Age 18+
  • Chronic (greater than 3 months) lower back pain most days of the week.
  • Attend Clinical Trials Facility, East Campus, University of South Australia for Parts 1 to 3.
  • Able to complete 12 weekly low impact sessions at Clinical Trials Facility (in person) or online if required by Covid-related restrictions.
  • No history of cancer, neuropathy or neurological signs (tingling, numbness), breathing issues (for example interstitial lung disease, heart failure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder), headaches or surgery within three months.
