About the study

This study aims to explore the use of mediated reality and virtual reality technology during exercise. We need your assistance and your feedback about these technologies so that we can improve them as much as possible before we test them.

If you choose to participate in this study you will need to attend 1-2 sessions (approximately 1.5 – 2 hours per session) at either the University of South Australia (City East Campus) or at a physiotherapist clinic in Adelaide. You will be reimbursed $20 via gift voucher for your time.

Eligibility Requirements

You can participate if you are 50 years of age or older and have:

  • Painful knee osteoarthritis (for at least 6 months)
  • No health conditions that would prevent you from doing activity
  • No cognitive impairment (Alzheimer’s or dementia)
  • No disorders affecting your lower limb (stroke, multiple sclerosis)

Benefits

You may not receive individual benefit. However, the mediated reality and virtual reality technologies have been shown to reduce pain and perceived effort when exercising for some individuals. Your participation will also provide wider benefits to the community by providing important information on how to improve these technologies for use in clinical settings by those with knee osteoarthritis.

This project has been approved by the University of South Australia's Human Research Ethics Committee (Ethics Protocol 204598).
