Project LIVE: Learning through Immersive Virtual Environments


drilling rigSoren Soe, Program Leader – Drilling – MinEx CRC, has joined together with Tom Raimondo’s team in UniSA STEM in Project LIVE: Learning through Immersive Virtual Environments.

Program One: Drilling Technologies, will extend the capability of Coiled Tubing (CT) drilling so it can drill deeper, is steerable and delivers the highest quality sampling.  Coiled tubing technology promises drilling at 1/5th the cost of conventional diamond drilling and thus has the potential to drive a revolution in mineral exploration whilst delivering significant health, safety and environmental benefits.  Drilling tasks that are more suited to conventional drilling will also be tackled by the MinEx CRC, developing technologies for optimising the performance and increasing the productivity of Reverse Circulation (RC) and diamond drilling techniques.

The Program comprises of the following two projects:
Project 1: Drilling Optimisation
Project 2: Coiled Tubing Drilling for Definition of Mineral Deposits

The most significant challenge to mineral explorers in Australia is to discover new deposits at significant depths below the surface, in areas that are completely covered by thick sediments. Exploration drilling is key to identifying minerals below the surface, but it's expensive and the single biggest cost for companies.

The MinEx CRC is helping to further develop and test a new coiled tubing (CT) drilling rig for greenfields mineral exploration. This solution – called RoXplorer® – provides real-time information to enable more effective exploration in areas of deep cover. It delivers continuous samples and information while drilling to allow companies to make decisions about exploration strategy in the field. This enables the RoXplorer® to achieve significant improvements in productivity, safety and environmental performance compared to conventional drilling methods.
