About this project

Explore the impacts of senior entrepreneurship on the economy and society

If you’re motivated to build a career in public policy and keen to develop knowledge in senior entrepreneurship, the University of South Australia – Australia’s University of Enterprise – is offering an innovative project-based PhD with societal impact within UniSA Business, in partnership with the Office of the South Australian Chief Entrepreneur, Department for Industry, Innovation and Science.

The traditional policymaking focusing on well-being of aged people is limited to concerns relating to superannuation, aged-care homes, and hospital access. These are important matters but at best offer only a partial solution to widespread issues relating to ageing.

For the above reasons there is a compelling need to think innovatively about the ageing issue and the contribution of ‘senior entrepreneurship’ (SE) in delivering well-being to the individual and creating social value for the community.

Many Australians (almost one-fifth) aged over 55 claim that age is a disadvantage when looking for paid work and that this inability to work jeopardises their well-being. Senior entrepreneurship can be a potent public policy tool to overcome this challenge. It can contribute to not just the well-being of the individual, but also society. For its twin significant benefits, it is gaining traction with some forward-looking government agencies.

This project seeks to investigate SE from policy and best practices perspectives. As we assess the best practices in SE holistically, we focus on action learning vs other approaches to support SE, the idea of a senior to senior (S2S) support framework, and assessing SE beyond the mainstream economic contribution, including societal well-being.

Our aim is to disseminate findings and recommendations to government and non-government agencies that focus on the welfare of seniors. This is an opportunity for you to contribute to significant policy innovation with real-world impact.

You will be embedded within UniSA Business and benefit from its world-class, multidisciplinary researchers and outstanding facilities. Liaising with our partner organisation and other stakeholders will provide you with an excellent means of building a strong industry and professional network.

What you’ll do

In this project-based research degree, you will carry out fieldwork, including developing and conducting interviews and surveys, and collect both primary and secondary data. As our multiple stakeholders are in diverse locations you will have the opportunity to travel within and outside the state.

Upon completion, you will possess several skill sets. Methodologically, you will have skills in mixed methods research and associated data analysis techniques. You will have developed better knowledge in the management and policy areas, especially relating to entrepreneurship. Your studies will also give you deep, expert knowledge in the growing field of SE, making you a highly employable specialist in a burgeoning area.

There are opportunities for you to attend conferences and seminars and publish in international scholarly journals and/or industry outlets.

Where you’ll be based

You’ll be based at UniSA Business in City West Campus of UniSA (Adelaide). We develop career-ready graduates, and positively affect communities and environments locally, nationally, and globally. We offer a suite of innovative programs in disciplines including business, accounting and finance, marketing, management, tourism and events, and property, as well as our Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive Education programs. UniSA Business is the only business school in South Australia accredited by both AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and EFMD (EQUIS).

Our researchers are thought leaders who engage in world-class research and share their insights with students, industry and government partners. Our findings translate directly into results that transform businesses and affect communities for the better. Our reach extends beyond the classroom.
