ARC Linkage: Safer Roads Through Wireless Communications

Each year, 1.2 Million people are killed, and over 50 Million are injured as a result of road crashes. This significant public health problem is similar in magnitude to many serious diseases. By 2020, road injuries are predicted to increase by 65% and will be the third highest cause of disability-adjusted life years. Worldwide, the economic cost of road crash injuries ranges from 1%-2% GDP, exceeding $145 Billion per annum globally.

Cooperative safety systems based on accurate positioning and vehicle-to-vehicle communication can warn drivers of unsafe scenarios and have the potential to significantly reduce the number of road crashes. In the future many complementary safety technologies will work together to increase safety and deliver proactive crash avoidance. It is of interest to consider the possibility of using vehicle-to-vehicle wireless signals not only for communication, but also for radar purposes. As the penetration of vehicle-to-vehicle communication increases, this concept admits the possibility of a large scale, cooperative, mobile, multistatic radar imaging system, extending safety benefits to single-vehicle collisions and non-equipped vehicles. It could also provide an approach to independently validate the position/motion of vehicles for security purposes.

The aim of this project is to further increase the safety benefits of emerging vehicle-to-vehicle communications systems by adding radar capabilities which leverage existing communications signals.
