The world is moving, but not all opinions and governments are willing to accept this poorly understood reality. Migration affects both states and the planet and raises new challenges for international relations.

This event will explore the responsibilities and opportunities for refugee protection, integration and settlement from a variety of perspectives and examine current issues in Australia, Europe and globally. Discussion will examine the key challenges raised by international migration: including identity and belonging, policy and public response and the factors which support settlement. Considering future trends, the panel will also explore how migration can positively impact communities socially, culturally and economically.  

PANELLISTS

Catherine Wihtol de Wenden is Director of research at CNRS (The French National Centre for Scientific Research, a part of The Centre for International Studies - CERI). For 30 years she has been a researcher on international migration, from a Political Science and Public Law approach. She studied in Sciences-Po Paris and University Paris I (Panthéon- Sorbonne) She received her PhD in Political Science in 1986. She has published 20 books, alone or as co-writer and around 150 articles. She is also teaching at Sciences-Po, at the University La Sapienza and Luiss in Rome and she has been President of the Research Committee Migration of ISA –International Sociological Association- (2002-2008) and expert for several international organisations (UNHCR, Council of Europe and European Commission). Her distinctions are Chevalier de la legion d’honneur (The Legion of Honour, 2014) and médaille d’honneur du CNRS (The CNRS Medal of Honour, 2017).

Her recent titles include: Atlas des migrations, Autrement, 2018 (5ème édition), la question migratoire au XXIème siècle (2017, Presses de Sc Po, 3ème édition), Faut-il ouvrir les frontières? Presses de ScPo 2017, 3ème édition. Dernières parutions : Atlas des droits de l'Homme (Autrement, 2018), Géopolitique des migrations (Eyrolles, 2019).

DR DAVID RADFORD, SOCIOLOGY LECTURER,
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Dr David Radford is a Sociology Lecturer at the University of South Australia, where he is also Co-Research Platform Leader: Migrations, Mobilities and Cultural Identities in the EU and Australia (Hawke-EU Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence). David researches and publishes widely on the challenges and opportunities of rural migration, especially regarding refugee-background and non-European migrants. David currently investigates the positive contributions of refugee-background migrants to local communities.  Recent publications include: ‘Space, place and identity: Intercultural encounters, affect and belonging in rural Australian spaces’ (2017, Journal of Intercultural Studies) and ‘Everyday otherness: Intercultural refugee encounters and everyday multiculturalism in a rural South Australia town’ (2016, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies).

MANAL YOUNUS
STORYTELLER

Manal Younus is an Australian based freelance storyteller from Eritrea who believes that language and stories are the very fabric of our existence. Using her writing and performance, Manal explores different aspects of life from perseverance, identity, travel and truth. She speaks on a vast number of issues including youth leadership, gender and female empowerment, faith, blackness, culture, language, migration, displacement, racism and inter-culturalism. Manal has featured on ABC's QandA, presented at the Adelaide TEDx, just to name a few favourites.

Manal also facilitates writing, performance, public speaking, youth empowerment and intercultural awareness workshops in schools, community groups and professional environments to encourage others to develop their own voices.
