Light Pollution

We are lighting up the night in our cities and towns at faster rates than ever. Light pollution is light from artificial lights at night that escape upward and sideways creating glare, light trespass and sky glow.
In this talk, we see how light pollution happens. How it interferes with astronomical research, its effect on flora and fauna and us.  We need light at night for safety, amenity and cultural activities.  We will see, however, that still we can protect the night sky, bring back the stars and persevere, even improve our nightscape environment at the same time.

Since prehistoric times the earliest humans looked up in fascination at the night sky and recorded the movements of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars.

The Adelaide Planetarium was originally built in 1972 for the purposes of teaching astro-surveying to students when it was part of the South Australian Institute of Technology. The celestial realm has been used for millennia by humans to find their way and locate their position on land, air and sea. Nowadays it is almost all entirely done by satellite technology.
