The engineering and construction industries operate in a continually evolving landscape, impacted by factors such as environmental regulations, autonomous operations, hardware and analytics capabilities, government policy, and access to building materials.

Navigating and capitalising on this backdrop is a key focus for UniSA. By partnering with industry, we apply our strong research capabilities to company challenges, resulting in new strategies that support engineering and building management processes.

Our multidisciplinary approach connects partners to researchers from a range of fields, including engineering, fabrication, construction management, computer science, environmental science, social sciences, economics, architecture, mathematics, software development and business intelligence.

What we do

Building information modelling support

Providing guidance on applying digital technologies to environmentally sustainable construction methods

Applying autonomous and augmented intelligence systems to construction and infrastructure planning, design and execution

Finding solutions to remediate contaminated sites

Inspiring young talent through project-based PhD opportunities is another way that we collaborate to support thought leadership and address the complex problems of our partners. Our researchers and students work with industry on a variety of projects, including:

  • Identifying design-led approaches to more sustainable cities
  • Developing reinforced crumbed rubber concrete for residential construction
  • Testing the strength and behaviour of full-scale, post-tensioned masonry wall with unbonded high strength bars
  • Exploring the potential use of glass fibre reinforced polymer reinforced concrete.

With expert researchers and state-of-the-art facilities, we have the capability to work with partners and the community to support major engineering and construction initiatives.

Shatterproof mirrors for safer, lower-emission cars

Through collaborative research, UniSA has partnered with Adelaide-based company SMR Automotive, in a partnership that has delivered the world’s first shatterproof plastic car mirror. By combining materials already available to the car industry, the new design capitalised on existing availability, while also simplifying assembly.

Weighing 50 per cent less than a conventional glass mirror, the plastic mirror has reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Its durability has also increased safety and reliability for the automotive industry, with a significant drop in mirror failure.

“As an immediate result of the collaboration with UniSA, SMR Australia constructed a world-class advanced surface technology manufacturing facility. By adding this new capability to its manufacturing portfolio, SMR Australia successfully capitalised on this opportunity and is now supplying advanced interior lighting products for a European supercar manufacturer.”

Architectural computing and design cognition are two of my main research areas. Applying this research to real-world issues is a key focus of mine, and through recent partnerships with Australian Institute of Architects South Australian Chapter, architecture studios such as Hames Sharley and ARM Architecture, and end-user organisation Uniting Communities, we explored innovative ways to integrate emerging technologies into architecture practice and education and studied their impact on design and designers. Using technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, Building Information Modelling and Digital Twins, we can virtually test different design solutions and help improve the quality of and living experiences in the built environment.

Tiny devices have transformed the world around us by sensing and connecting information, machines, and people. As they get smaller, they are transforming how we do science, healthcare, manufacturing, and environmental management. My research studies “lab-on-a-chip” and micro/nanofluidic devices – tiny chips - that precisely sample, react, and sense to provide real-time status information for decision-makers in high-risk or high-value circumstances. In collaboration with Inovor Technologies, ULVAC Inc. and Nano Spaces, we are developing satellite systems that are smaller, more agile and more energy efficient, so they can withstand and respond to adverse events.

With over 20 years experience in the engineering field, my main research interests include green concrete materials, fibre composite structures, and seismic retrofitting of masonry structures. My colleagues and I are currently working with industry, including Tyre Stewardship Australia and FMG Engineering, to investigate the use of crumb rubber from recycled waste tyres to replace some of the sand aggregate in conventional concrete. By using crumb rubber, we can reduce the environmental impacts of both waste tyres and exploitation of natural material resources.
