International Alumni Awards

Vice Chancellor International Alumni Leadership Award

This award recognises the leadership qualities of our graduates and supporters of the university.

Awarded to those who show the leadership qualities that UniSA has instilled. Leadership, through the personal commitment of, time and energy and volunteerism over many years. Our leaders provide our students and graduates with the opportunity to secure professional positions with industry internships, placements or mentoring to advance their career outcomes.

The award also recognises the individual’s contribution to the Philanthropic goals of the university.

Awarded for the first time in 2017 and presented during the International Alumni Chapter reunions in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. In 2018 awards were given in the UK-Europe Chapter.


United Kingdom & Europe – Dennis Muirhead FRSA


Dennis Muirhead FRSA, was presented with a Vice Chancellor’s International Alumni Leadership Award in London in May 2018, recognising his contribution to the UK-Europe Alumni Chapter for over a decade.

Dennis was Chair of the South Australian Universities Alumni Europe from 2007 until 2011, and was its Honorary President and Trustee until early 2018.

The South Australian Universities Alumni Europe Chapter was established in 2002 by the Agent General for South Australia and shares affiliations with all of the South Australian-based universities. 

Born in Australia, Dennis spent most of his adult life in the UK as a human rights and music lawyer, commercial mediator, artist and record producer manager. In 1972 Dennis co-founded the London law firm Simons Muirhead & Burton which still bears his name.  From 1977-1979 he was counsel assisting the South Australian Royal Commission into the non-medical use of drugs. Dennis continued his interest in drugs as chair of City Roads (Crisis Intervention) and of the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence over two decades. He was a co-founder and the founding chair of the Music Managers Forum in 1992.  

Dennis is a Senior Mediator at Clerksroom and an original member of the Association of Cambridge Mediators (ACM). He studied law at the University of Adelaide, was admitted to the South Australian Bar in 1965 and then admitted as a solicitor in England in 1971.

United Kingdom & Europe – Elsa D’Ercoli


In August 2018, Elsa D’Ercoli received the Vice Chancellor’s International Alumni Leadership Award in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to the University of South Australia’s UK-Europe Alumni Chapter over the past 14 years.

The Vice Chancellor’s International Alumni Leadership Award recognises the outstanding achievements of UniSA’s international graduates and advocates of the University.

Elsa, who has an MBA from UniSA, was Vice-Chair of the South Australian Universities Alumni Europe from 2007 to 2017 and Trustee, Committee Member and mentor.

For almost four decades, Elsa has combined entrepreneurial activities in property and business development with a professional career, initially in Education and subsequently in Executive/Leadership Development and Talent Management. Her professional roles and experience have seen her operate in corporate and consultancy environments at both national and global levels. She acknowledges her MBA from UniSA as pivotal in progressing her pursuit of a global career. This also inspired an active involvement towards promoting the objectives of the South Australian Universities Alumni Europe.

In 2010, she returned to South Australia after spending more than a decade working in her field in United Kingdom, Europe and India. Currently, she is managing her property and commercial portfolio, established over some years.

Elsa also holds a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education from Flinders University, a Graduate Diploma in Community Languages, Italian from The University of Adelaide and a Fellowship in Dramatic Arts from the Royal Academy of Arts. She is an Alumni Fellow of The University of Adelaide.

From 2006 to 2010, Elsa was a South Australian Business Ambassador, appointed by the Premier of South Australia, Hon Mike Rann MP.

 Singapore – Andrew Chen FUniSA

Andrew Chen


Andrew was awarded the Singapore, Vice Chancellor International Alumni Leadership Award in July 2017, for his devotion to education and his support of the next generation of future leaders.

Andrew was founder and Chief Executive of the Asia Pacific Management Institute in Singapore from 1989to 2006. The Institute was an international program partner of UniSA for 15 years from 1991 to 2006.

In 2006 the University made Andrew a fellow of UniSA as a special acknowledgement of his contribution to education on an international scale.

Andrew with his wife is now supporting the next generation of future leaders through the establishment the Graham Arnold Travel Grant and the Graham Arnold Prize. These awards support the exceptional UniSA  Business PhD students attain their academic aspirations and provides the opportunity to attend either the Academy of Management Conference or the Academy of International Business Conference in the United States.

Malaysia – Ir Yeong Chee Meng FUniSA

Mr Yeong was awarded the Malaysian Vice Chancellor International Alumni Leadership Award in July 2017 during the UniSA Malaysian Alumni Chapter Reunion Dinner for his extraordinary contribution to our alumni in Malaysia and the University.

As a past Vice President and President of the Malaysian Alumni Chapter he was an active, outstanding member of the committee encouraging Malaysian alumni to stay connected with the chapter and the university. Mr Yeong is still giving back to the alumni community as the chapter’s patron and as a mentor to members of the committee.

He was made a Fellow of the University of South Australia in 2006 for his services to engineering and to the Alumni Association of Malaysia.

Mr Yeong is currently head of the Don Sahong Hydropower Project at Mega First Corporation, a Director of Don Sahong Power in Kuala Lumpur, and a generous donor to the University of South Australia.

Hong Kong – Dr Edward Lam

Dr Lam was awarded the Hong Kong Vice Chancellor International Alumni Leadership Award in November 2017 during the UniSA Hong Kong Alumni Chapter 20th Anniversary Reunion Dinner. Recognising his contribution to the development of UniSA Hong Kong Alumni Chapter and MBA Club and his foresight in supporting future leaders through his community work as the District Commissioner of Scout Association of Hong Kong and as President of the Hong Kong SME Federation.

Dr Edward Lam is a Foundation President of the UniSA MBA Club in Hong Kong established in 2002 and was President of Hong Kong Chapter 2008 - 2014. Dr Lam has contributed significantly to the development of UniSA Hong Kong Alumni Chapter and as the President he led a strong team of executive members to grow the Chapter’s membership during his term.

Edward is still an active member of the alumni community and is currently serving as the Vice President of the Hong Kong Alumni Chapter.

Dr Lam is now the CEO of Delicron, a leading brand for menswear in Hong Kong and China.
