Executive Director, South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute

Professor Wesselingh is a leading infectious diseases physician and researcher in the areas of neurovirology, HIV and vaccine development. In 2011, he was appointed the inaugural executive director of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.

Prior to that appointment, Professor Wesselingh spent four years as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University (regarded as one of Australia's foremost health faculties). Before that, he was director of the Burnet Institute, which is an independent medical research institute that specialises in infectious diseases, immunology and public health.

Having completed his undergraduate and doctoral training at Flinders University and Flinders Medical Centre in South Australia, Professor Wesselingh undertook his post-doctoral training at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. In 2012, Professor Wesselingh joined a list of 566 people to be inducted into the prestigious Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars.

Throughout his career, Professor Wesselingh has consistently worked towards integrating high quality medical research with health-care delivery, which has led to improved health outcomes for Australia and a number of poorly resourced countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
