University of South Australia Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd

University of South Australia Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd has been appointed to the South Australia Economic Development Board (EDB) in a move to refresh the board and focus its efforts on job creation.

Premier Jay Wheatherill says the new membership of the EDB reflects the transition of the SA economy.

“Prof Lloyd’s appointment reflects the Government’s priority to establish better partnerships with universities and businesses to create new jobs,” he says.

Raymond Spencer will Chair the EDB which will include other new appointments – former Liberal Premier Rob Kerin, broker and former managing director of JP Morgan David Garrand, expert in photonics and physicist Prof Tanya Monro, former secretary of the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education Dr Donald Russell and former lawyer, General Manager of the not-for-profit organisation Renew Adelaide, Lily Jacobs.

The new board members reflect the State’s growth sectors - specifically unconventional gas, education and agricultural areas.

Prof Lloyd says he is delighted to be able to contribute to this important advisory body.

“The State has some challenges to confront but importantly it has the right elements to meet them – high potential research in support of high potential industries,” Prof Lloyd says.

“It is vital that we establish the networks between education, research and industry that put us on the path to innovation and growth. If we do that well, there is every chance South Australia can become the capital for enterprising developments across health, biotechnology, education, design, IT and systems engineering.”

Mr Weatherill says the Board will now be supported by the new Department for State Development and report to him through the newly established Economic Development Cabinet Committee.

“The EDB will continue to be a source of independent advice to Government and monitor the state’s economic performance but it will also drive policy development and attract inbound investment,” he says.

He also thanked the outgoing board members including UniSA Chancellor Dr Ian Gould, Michael Keating, Kevin Osborn, Grant Belchamber, Michael Hickinbotham and Corinne Namblard for their service to South Australia.

From 1 July 2014, there will be 12 EDB members:
