man holding representations of mechanical cogsToday the University of South Australia will sign up to an important partnership with Seeley International in a Memorandum of Understanding that includes Flinders University and TAFE SA and will encourage broad opportunities for students to access direct industry experience.

Under the agreement UniSA students will have access to Seeley International research and manufacturing facilities, including its recently completed $1.5million testing laboratory at Lonsdale. The agreement also makes provision for Seeley International engineering specialists to present guest lectures and workshops for students, boosting their understanding and experience of engineering in the commercial context.

UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd says the agreement will be a boon for engineering students at the University.

“This partnership is important for what it can provide the next generation of engineers,” Prof Lloyd says. “The practical lessons of the commercial environment are what hone an engineer’s ability to find the right solutions for industry problems.

“Being able to combine excellent theoretical learning in the classroom with practical experience in industrial R&D environments while you are still an undergraduate is so important to the development of work ready graduates.

“This kind of collaboration is vital for South Australia as it seeks to build the technology industries of the future and enterprising graduates who will lead those industries.”

With UniSA ranked as one of the top six universities for academic excellence in engineering and technology, Prof Lloyd says this partnership will provide more valuable opportunities to integrate innovative and industry relevant concepts into the curriculum.

The MOU will also support vital research collaborations to deliver technological improvements and innovations in line with Seeley’s International’s mission to develop increasingly energy-efficient products which have reduced environmental impacts.

Seeley International is Australia’s largest air conditioning manufacturer and global leader in developing energy-efficient cooling and heating.
