Duration

The Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience program allows students to travel overseas for 12 weeks, constituting the typical one full-time study period, worth 18 units (equivalent of 4 courses) towards a Bachelor degree. 

Eligibility

The Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience is placed within the Bachelor of Arts program as a minor, and is open to students in the Bachelor of Arts, double or combined degrees, and as an elective to students in programs which can to accommodate 4 electives.

The program is open to students who have completed at least 36 units, (that is, the program is not open to students in their 1st year of study) and in general it is not offered as the last course students take in their program.

Further eligibility criteria include a minimum GPA of 4.5, and students should not have failed more than 9 units in the program in which they are enrolled.

As a prerequisite, students who participate in the program should:

  • demonstrate empathy and an understanding of cultural difference.
  • have good health or a manageable health condition supported by a certificate from a registered medical practitioner, indicating that they would be able to participate in the program.
  • demonstrate excellent personal skills; and,
  • demonstrate a measure of self-reliance.

Financial support

The university offers to qualifying students the possibility to apply for an international mobility Travel Grant Scheme of up to $2,500, which is the maximum students can access during their entire program of study.

  • The $2,500 amount is offered only for overseas volunteering periods of at least 12 weeks. Under 12 weeks, the maximum amount a student can apply for is $1,000.
  • Once the details of the overseas volunteering have been approved by the Course Coordinator and the student has enrolled in the Hawke Ambassador course, application for this travel grant can be submitted through the link available here.

Furthermore, Australian students could be eligible for the OS-HELP loans and overseas study program for an amount of up to $7,998, depending on the destination.
