Work & Stress Research Group

.
Background
The concept of the Work and Stress Research Group grew out of the need to respond to urgent work health issues in the areas of ergonomics, work stress, violence at work, drug addiction, and unemployment and provide a focus for quality research and consulting. The Work and Stress Research Group was registered with the University of South Australia in December 1996, although members of the group have been collaborating in projects for many years. The group is a multidisciplinary, cross-campus (Whyalla-Adelaide), and cross-university (SA-Adelaide) team. The group has a strong research and consulting profile with a demonstrated ability to attract nationally competitive research grants, with members of international standing. Members of the group currently hold positions at a national level in the International Stress Management Association (President, Chair, and Treasurer).

Research and Consulting Areas

Work Stress Ergonomics
Drug Addiction Unemployment
Violence in the Workplace Public vs Private Sector Stress
Suicide Asthma

Update 1999

During 1999 Prof Tony Winefield commenced an ARC/ SPIRT project with the NTEU to conduct a national longitudinal study on Occupational Stress in Australian Academics.  Work continued on the study of the working life of rural academics by Ms Bronwyn Ellis, Ms Janet Sawyer and Dr Maureen Dollard.

International collaborations, led by Dr Maureen Dollard with The Netherlands and Germany were fruitful.  The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia together with Australian Academy of the Humanities hosted a visit by Dr Dollard to the Netherlands.  A number of colloborative research projects are under way, including collaborative supervision of a PhD student.  As part of the exchange Assoc Prof  Jan de Jonge, Department of Work and Organizational Psychology, at the University of Nijmegen, will visit the university and participate in the Master of Organisational Psychology lecture series.  Leading German researcher Prof Dieter Zapf, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University, Frankfurt, visited the University of South Australia presenting a seminar on workplace bullying.  A research project has been set up between the three universities.

In addition, the group has published a number of refereed journal articles, and presented at national and international conferences.  The book Occupational Stress in Human Service Workers, authored by Dr. Maureen Dollard, Assoc Prof Helen Winefield and Prof Tony Winefield is currently under contract by Kluwer Academic Publishers, The Netherlands.  Finally, Prof Tony Winefield has been asked to give a state of the art lecture on The Psychology of Unemployment at the International Congress of Psychology in Stockholm 2000.  This honour has been bestowed on only two other Australians.
