WSUD: basic procedures for ‘source control’ of stormwater

– a Handbook for Australian practice

Editor: John R Argue

This Handbook is focussed on the principles of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) applied to stormwater management and is endorsed by Stormwater Industry Association (SIA), the Australian Water Association (AWA) and Dept of Water, Western Australia. The Handbook has been adopted by EEA (Engineering Education Australia) as the basis for a series of 2-day Workshops conducted across the nation since August, 2005. The Handbook has been well received and found relevant to the needs of municipal officers and government regulators responsible for urban stormwater management and to consultants who undertake detailed (stormwater) design tasks for councils and developers. The technical content is equally applicable to practitioners in Darwin, Hobart, Perth and Brisbane and all urban concentrations located between these extremities of the nation.

Features of the Handbook include –

·         procedures and strategies promoting a high level of environmental quality in natural streams of catchments experiencing urbanisation;

·         planning measures enabling existing, competent stormwater infrastructures to cope with continuing urbanisation without the need for enlargement or augmentation;

·         planning measures which exploit the opportunities provided by re-development to reclaim flood plains and re-establish waterways of over-developed catchments;

·         techniques and practices providing high levels of pollution control in urban components such as car parks and residential streets;

·         design procedures and ‘worked examples’ set out, for the most part, in step-by-step format;

·         case study illustrations including maintenance experience drawn from field installations with between nine and 15 years of operational history;

·         introduction and access to rainwater tank sizing software, including economic considerations, suitable for domestic and industrial applications anywhere in Australia.

  • An Appendix devoted to tutorial exercises on typical WSUD (stormwater) tasks.

The Handbook received the 2005 SIA National Award for excellence in Stormwater Education, the 2005 Excellence Award for Engineering Reports (South Australia Division of Engineers Australia) and was a Finalist in the 2005 National EA Engineering Excellence Awards.

The cost of the Handbook is $ 167.00 including GST and is obtainable from –
