Ten years of rush and racing
It may be months away, but we are gearing up to feel the rush in
a very special way at the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under in January.
The now bigger and better race, which kicks off the annual professional cycling season, has been running for 11 years in Adelaide.
UniSA will be celebrating its 10-year association with the event and Team UniSA-Australia, by offering supporters more action-packed race reporting and a special insight into the Australian team.
We’ll be letting all of our supporters know just what is coming up in 2010 through the Team UniSA Supporters’ Club website which will again feature daily race reports and special commentary from Team UniSA Supporters’ Club Captain, Patrick Jonker.
Highlights across the past 10 years include Gene Bates winning the Share the Road Young Rider jersey at our first outing in 2001; the incredible 2004 win of the race overall by the retiring Patrick Jonker; winning the teams classification in 2006; the most courageous ride in 42 degree heat by Paul Crake and Russel Van Hout to take second and first at Willunga in 2006; Karl Menzies’ yellow jersey assault in 2007, only pipped at the last stage by two seconds; and the explosive riding of 18-year old Jack Bobridge this year, who has since been signed to professional team Garmin.
Anyone interested in the history of Team UniSA at the TDU can find archived information dating back to 2004 on the website. Study up - there will be questions and prizes later.
More information about the Tour Down Under can be found at their website.
