SASA among Friends

(l to r) Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Christopher Menz; Patron of the Friends of SASA, Dr Kym Bonython; and Head of SASA, Prof Kay Lawrence at the Friends of SASA launchIt may come as no surprise that the South Australian School of Art has plenty of friends – but now it’s official.

Thousands of students have passed through the doors of the South Australian School of Art (SASA) since its inception in 1856.

Some have gone on to have careers as celebrated artists; others have followed different but parallel paths; but many have retained an abiding affection for SASA, for the lessons they learnt there and the people they met.

Last month, admirers, graduates, students, past and present staff and well-wishers celebrated the launch of the Friends of the South Australian School of Art.

Among the many aims of the Friends is to support and enhance SASA’s reputation, to provide a framework for the promotion and support of visual artists from the school and, more broadly, to promote contacts between people who value the visual arts, design and crafts.

Patron and Adelaide arts stalwart Dr Kym Bonython attended the launch, with Jack Condous, Chair of the Friends’ Steering Committee; Head of SASA, Professor Kay Lawrence; Pro Vice Chancellor, Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences Professor Pal Ahluwalia; and Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Christopher Menz.
