TOP OF THE CLASS: Fred Littlejohn has been recognised for his teaching talent and dedicationAfter years of watching his students scoop the pool of awards for design, Visual Communications Honours program director Fred Littlejohn has been recognised for his teaching talent and dedication.

His award, the Australian Council of University Art and Design Schools Distinguished Teaching Award, is for outstanding contribution to design education in Australia.

No stranger to winning awards – his work features regularly in the Australian Graphic Design Awards, the Design Institute of Australia Awards, the Packaging Council of Australia Awards and the Adelaide Art Directors Club Awards – this is the first time his instruction in his craft has been the focus.

His nomination, submitted by Professor Kay Lawrence, head of the South Australia School of Art, emphasised the creation of the Visual Communications Consultancy (VCC), an innovation giving honours students invaluable industry experience.

The nomination said students were frequently offered employment before they graduated because they'd had real experience dealing with clients and print and design agencies through their work with the VCC.

Littlejohn was described as an "exceptional teacher, who offer[ed] expert guidance while encouraging a student's individuality".

Testimonials from former students echoed this sentiment, with comments such as: "It is clear that Fred exhibits an innovative approach to teaching and communication" and "I believe Fred Littlejohn has been very successful in his career as a highly recognised and regarded award-winning graphic designer, and also in his career as an inspiring and dynamic university design lecturer".
