Consideration must be given to the overall file size of the page (including images) to ensure rapid download. Students accessing resources from home via a modem will experience long download times if Web pages are too large.
The file size of a Web page and images should be less than 80 kilobytes. The following table indicated the time taken to download an 80 Kb Web page over various modem speeds.
| Modem speed | Download time for 80 Kb Web page |
|---|---|
| 28.8 Kb | 22 seconds |
| 56 Kb | 11 seconds |
Due to the way images are linked to Web pages, it is necessary to
calculate the file size of the base page and add the file size of
each image. A base page of text, equivalent to an A4 size page, will
have a file size of about 30 Kb. The following table shows the
number of images that can be placed on a page, based on the image
samples displayed in the "Image size guide" Web page of the
UniSAnet demonstration site (link opens in a new browser
window).
| Base Page File Size | Image Sample | Number of Images on Page | Total Page File Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 Kb | 1 (25 Kb) | 2 | 80 Kb |
| 30 Kb | 2 (12 Kb) | 4 | 78 Kb |
| 30 Kb | 3 (8 Kb) | 6 | 78 Kb |
| 30 Kb | 4 (4 Kb) | 12 | 78 Kb |
