Page file size

Consideration must be given to the overall file size of the page (including images) to ensure rapid download. Students accessing resources from home via a modem will experience long download times if Web pages are too large.

The file size of a Web page and images should be less than 80 kilobytes. The following table indicated the time taken to download an 80 Kb Web page over various modem speeds.

Modem speed Download time for 80 Kb Web page
28.8 Kb 22 seconds
56 Kb 11 seconds

Due to the way images are linked to Web pages, it is necessary to calculate the file size of the base page and add the file size of each image. A base page of text, equivalent to an A4 size page, will have a file size of about 30 Kb. The following table shows the number of images that can be placed on a page, based on the image samples displayed in the "Image size guide" Web page of the UniSAnet demonstration site (link opens in a new browser window).

Base Page File Size Image Sample Number of Images on Page Total Page File Size
30 Kb 1 (25 Kb) 2 80 Kb
30 Kb 2 (12 Kb) 4 78 Kb
30 Kb 3 (8 Kb) 6 78 Kb
30 Kb 4 (4 Kb) 12 78 Kb
