Dr Ian Gould

Chancellor

Dr Ian Gould commenced as Chancellor of the University of South Australia on 1 July 2008.

A geologist by profession, Dr Gould has forty years experience in the minerals industry in diverse and senior positions, mainly within the CRA and Rio Tinto Group, in which he was Group Executive for Exploration and later for Research and Development before becoming the Managing Director Australia, and then Group Managing Director for Normandy Mining Ltd.

Educated at the University of Sydney, Dr Gould has a PhD in geology.

Dr Gould has based his career upon a strong scientific interest and belief in the importance to the community of the mining industry, and has been a keen and early proponent of excellence in environmental management for the industry. He was a leader in the development of the Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management in the mid 1990s.

In 2007 Dr Gould became a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and in the same year was awarded the Institute Medal by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, of which he is also a Fellow.

He has in-depth experience in corporate governance having served as a member or Chairman on a range of industry and organisation boards including the CSIRO Minerals Sector Advisory Committee, the South Australian Resources Industry Development Board, the National Parks and Wildlife Committee, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and St Andrew’s Hospital.

He is a professional with vast experience in governance and leadership and a comprehensive understanding of the nexus between education, innovation, the community and business.

The former CEO of the Australian Research Council, he has been a teaching academic, a professor engaged in high quality research in biochemistry and viticulture, and an industry leader in his former role as the Managing Director of the Australian Wine Research Institute.

Educated at the University of Copenhagen, majoring in biochemistry and chemistry, Professor Høj has a Master of Science degree in biochemistry and genetics and a PhD in plant biochemistry. He speaks several languages and has received fellowships from Denmark and Australia for post-doctoral studies in biochemistry.

Since arriving in Australia in 1987 he has worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer in biochemistry at La Trobe University and Professor of Viticultural Science and Professor of Oenology at the University of Adelaide.

In 1992, he was awarded the Boehringer-Mannheim medal by the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and in 2003 the Centenary Medal for his contribution to research and wine science. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

From October 2004 to April 2007 he was CEO of the Australian Research Council - the peak funding body for research in Australia today.

He served as a private member of the Prime Minister's Science Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) from 1999-2004 and as an ex officio member in 2006-2007. He is a former member of the Australian Institute of Marine Science Council; the Cooperative Research Centres Committee; the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy Committees; and of the Industry and Technology Council of South Australia, the Premier's Science and Research Council, and the South Australian Wine Industry Council.

Term of appointment: until 31 December 2009

Ms Alice McCleary has been Deputy Chancellor since 2002, a member of the University Council since 1998, and Presiding Officer of the University’s Finance Committee since its establishment in June 1998. Ms McCleary, a former corporate tax partner of Coopers and Lybrand, is now a professional independent director.

In addition to her role as Deputy Chancellor, she is Director of Uranium SA Ltd; Adelaide Community Healthcare Alliance Inc; Great Southern Ltd; and Archer Exploration Ltd. She is also a member of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants, Commonwealth Takeovers Panel and Corporations and Markets Advisory Committee.

Ms McCleary is an experienced public speaker and regularly addresses professional, government and business organisations on a variety of business and tax issues. In 2003 she was awarded a Centenary Medal for services to higher education and the community.

Associate Professor Stephen BoyleAssociate Professor Stephen Boyle

Associate Professor Stephen Boyle is acting Head of School of Management. Prior to joining the University in 2000 as a lecturer in the Arts and Cultural Management program, Stephen had an extensive career within the music industry.

Stephen currently teaches a number of courses within the Division of Business and is a board member of the Association of Arts Administration Educators. He is also a TAFE SA board member and currently a member and acting Chair of UniSA Academic Board.

Mr Bill CosseyMr Bill Cossey AM

Term of appointment: until 31 December 2010

Bill retired in 2004 from the position of Chief Executive of the State Courts Administration Authority, a position he held for five years.

Prior to joining Courts, Bill was the Deputy Chief Executive of the Department of Industry and Trade and Chief Executive Officer of the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust. Bill has also held the Chief Executive Officer positions of other State Government Departments — those being the State Services Department, the Office of Business and Regional Development and the Office of the Government Management Board.

Bill is active as a volunteer in a number of organisations, being a member of the governing bodies of the University of South Australia, the Don Dunstan Foundation and Tennis SA.

He is also a Board member of the Government’s Social Inclusion Board (since 2004), Elderly Citizens’ Homes (ECH), the Energy Industry Ombudsman’s Board and the Savings and Loans Credit Union.

Terry Evans is presently engaged as Special Counsel for Minter Ellison, Lawyers, Adelaide. Prior to that he was the Deputy Chief Executive and then Acting Chief Executive for the Justice Department and South Australian Attorney General’s Department (2004-2006). He was the Chief Commercial Counsel in the Crown Solicitor’s Office from 1996-2004. Before that Terry was a partner with Minter Ellison and was its managing partner for several years. Terry holds a number of board positions in the corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors.

Bruce Linn is an experienced Company Director and formerly CEO of Finlaysons Lawyers based in Adelaide, South Australia.

His previous executive roles include Executive Director for EDS, responsible for all State Government business of EDS in Australia and Chief Executive of Camtech, one of Australia's leading Internet & Electronic Payments companies.

A Science graduate of The University of Adelaide, he has over 30 years experience in business management, leadership, marketing and information communications technology.

Current Directorships and Board positions include the Council and Finance Committee of The University of South Australia, the boards of SABRENet Limited, St. Peters Collegiate Girls School, the SA/NT Division Council of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and as Chair of Community Information Strategies Australia (CISA).

He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the Australian Computer Society.


Mr Jim McDowell

Jim worked for 18 years at the aerospace company, Bombardier/Shorts, in the UK, USA, Middle East and Asia in various Legal, Commercial and Marketing positions.  He finished his career in Shorts as Vice President - Sales, Marketing and Commercial for Shorts Missile Systems Ltd., a joint venture with the French company, Thomson CSF (now Thales)

In August 1996, Jim joined British Aerospace in Singapore as an Executive Vice President in the corporate Sales and Marketing organisation and was promoted to President - Northern Asia in December 1997.  In April 1999 he took up the position as Managing Director - Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.  Following British Aerospace's merger with Marconi Electronic Systems in November 1999, Jim was appointed Regional Managing Director - Asia of BAE Systems based in Hong Kong

Ian is well established in the South Australian business community as a Chartered Accountant, business adviser and initiator of projects and new business concepts. Ian's career spans nearly 30 years in professional practice.

Term of appointment: until 31 December 2010

Sue retired in 2008 from the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Families and Communities (SA), a position she held since 2004.

Prior to this position, Sue was the inaugural Chief Executive of the Federal agency Centrelink where she stayed for nearly 8 years. She has also held a number of senior positions of state government departments, those being Chief Executive of Department for Correctional Services (SA), Commissioner (SA) of Public Employment and Chief Executive of the Office of Public Sector Reform (SA).

Sue's hard work and dedication has been highly regarded, receiving a centenary medal in 2001 and both the South Australian and inaugural Telstra Business Woman of the year in 1995.

Over the years she has been on many public sector boards and councils including Editorial Board of the Australian and the Administrative Review Council. Most recently in 2009, Sue was appointed member to the Australian Red Cross Board.

Ms Tanya HoschMs Tanya Hosch

 

Term of appointment: until 31 December 2010

Tanya works primarily in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs and other areas of social policy including young people, women's issues and some areas of health. This work is balanced with work as a part time board director and committee member. Previous positions have included the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre, the Foundation for Young Australians and was a co-founder, former Trustee and inaugural Chairperson of the National Indigenous Youth Movement of Australia.

Tanya serves as a Director on the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation, and this year was appointed as a Director of the inaugural board of The Australian Centre for Social Innovation. Since 2006 Tanya has been a Board Member for International Funders of Indigenous Peoples based in North America.

Tanya holds a position as a Visiting Research Fellow with the University of Technology, Sydney and is currently working on the process for developing options for the establishment of a new National Indigenous Representative Body.

Professor Drew DawsonProfessor Drew Dawson

Professor Drew Dawson is nationally and internationally recognised for his contributions to research and industry in the areas of sleep and fatigue, human factors and safety management, industrial relations, and the biological and societal implications of working hours.

Professor Dawson has worked as a researcher at UniSA in the Division of Education Arts and Social Sciences for nearly 15 years and is currently the:
• Director of the internationally recognised Centre for Sleep Research
• Interim Director of the Zero Waste SA Research Centre
• Chair of the National Partnerships and CRC Engagement Committee
• Co-chair of the Sustainable Communities Cluster
• Member of the Safe Work SA Research Advisory Committee

He was elected as the staff representative to the University Council for 2009-10 and has a strong commitment to staff and student advocacy in a rapidly evolving higher education sector.

Ms Bronwen Webb

Bronwen (Bron) Webb is Division Manager for the Division of Health Sciences and 2008 is her 10th year at UniSA. Bron previously held Business Development Manager and International Business Development Manager roles in the Division and came to UniSA following a Nursing career within both the private and public health sectors. Bron is energetic and committed and is involved across a broad range of the University’s core business. She has board level experience in industry and the community, as a previous member of the Board of the Australian Centre for Community Ageing and the current Chair of the South Australian Writers’ Centre Board of Management. Bron brings with her a broad knowledge of UniSA, strong support of the critical role of professional staff, and industry background.
