Cultural Awareness programs
The general aims of The Unaipon School's Cultural Awareness programs are to facilitate public sector employees in the development and expansion of their knowledge and understanding of South Australian Aboriginal cultures, societies and issues.
Each training session will include an introduction to Indigenous cultures and languages with an emphasis on developing a knowledge and understanding of the wider Aboriginal community. Our training will combine theory with a focus on its relevance to practice issues facing workers in their day to day activities.
Program aims
- To introduce participants to the diversity of Aboriginal languages and cultures in South Australia and nationally.
- To enable participants to gain an insight into significant historical issues that impact upon contemporary Indigenous communities.
- To explore common myths and misunderstandings of Indigenous cultures
- To explore the dimensions of racism and incorporating relevant policies and legislation and how these policies impact on practice with Indigenous people.
This proposal brings together a team with:
- Knowledge and understanding of working with and within Aboriginal families, communities and agencies;
- acute awareness of the issues impacting the lives of Aboriginal people;
- expertise in consulting with a wide range of people, analysing their context and perceptions, and summarising their views in a way which is respectful of them;
- facilitation skills that are respectful of participants and allow for managed debate in which all voices are heard
