Associate Professor Ieva Stupans, of the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, and former Dean: Teaching and Learning in the Division of Health Sciences, is one of nine outstanding Australian university teachers to be awarded an ALTC Fellowship in 2009.
In announcing the fellowships on 22 May 2009, ALTC Executive Director Professor Richard Johnstone said that the nine fellowships, valued at $1.65 million, will provide significant national benefit.
“I congratulate the successful Fellows who will be working in areas critical to improving student learning and learning outcomes,” he said.
Associate Professor Stupans fellowship program is titled: Supporting student transition to a futures orientated professional identity
In Australia, the allied health and nursing curriculum is intended to address requisite knowledge, skills and attributes defined through professional competencies. Previous work by Dr Stupans in pharmacy curriculum has indicated that there is a tendency toward superficial notions of professionalism and a lack of obvious references to leadership or lifelong learning. Thus the intent of her fellowship program is to “develop curriculum initiatives around professionalism, lifelong learning and leadership skills”.
While situated within a disciplinary context, this program will develop a framework for staged achievement that can be adapted to other allied health and nursing programs. Dr Stupans will be seeking the views of industry, academics and students, running forums in South Australia, mapping curriculum, and collaborating to develop teaching and dissemination strategies that address the national context.
