Team UniSA-Australia 2006Well we have been told in no uncertain terms “we are not here to get a suntan” and that is straight from the team manager, Dave Sanders’ mouth so we can expect something special from Team UniSA-Australia this year – or certainly a Trojan effort.

Fresh from his win in the Australian Open Road Championships at the weekend Russell van Hout is as fired up as we have ever seen him with this race part of a personal goal to win a place in the Commonwealth Games team. Gene Bates is displaying a sense of determined strength and confidence, a sign of growing experience and maturity and return rider Chris Jongewaard is more than pleased to have been selected and well aware that there was strong competition for a place in the team.

As to the new team members – they are a great bunch of professionals and have been surprised and delighted with the strength of support for Team UniSA-Australia in the state.

We met them all for the first time last night. They have what can only be described as all the best sportsmanlike qualities – humility and perspective, intelligence and application, fitness and focus.

The team as a whole has real strength in its diversity with some strong climbers and good sprinters and two or three riders that can make a great job of both.

Tonight’s Jacob’s Creek Tour Down Under Classic will not count for points in the overall tour but riders will have the chance to win cash prizes attached to four race sponsor sprints staged every five km across the 25 lap race.

This new start to the tour promises to be an exciting exhibition race where pace is paramount.
