Stage 2 -
Salisbury to Tanunda (150km)

Be Active Tour UniSA team riders preparing for their 150km journey

Recreational cyclists get active

by Rodney Magazinovic

The 2005 Be Active Tour took place earlier today with over 1900 cyclists taking up the challenge of riding 30, 100 or 150 kilometres along the actual Tour Down Under Stage 2 course from Salisbury to Tanunda. Premier Mike Rann waved the starters’ flag to get the event underway on what turned out to be a very humid day with the temperature reaching the mid 30’s.

The Be Active Tour is a unique event that gives recreational cyclists the chance to experience the same conditions as the Tour Down Under riders and has grown in leaps and bounds since the inaugural event in 2002, which saw 600 riders make the start.

A healthy contingent of over 50 UniSA staff and students were involved in this year’s ride, with the majority choosing to tackle the two longer distances.

One such participant was Be Active UniSA team organiser Jeff Kasparian. A veteran of both previous events he explained shortly before the start that it’s the atmosphere that makes the Be Active Tour so attractive to participants.

“I just love the event. It’s one of the biggest buzzes I’ve had in a sporting event. This event is fantastic.”

2004 Tour Down Under winner and current Team UniSA Supporter’s Club Captain Patrick Jonker also rode in this years Be Active Tour which he described as being a real pleasure to take part in.

“One of the nicest things was being just one of the riders – no pressure, no recognition – simply a nice long ride.”
