Stage Five - Willunga -
Willunga
If you ever give more than lip service to the "what's wrong with the
world today" theory can I suggest that you attend the Willunga leg of
the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under in 2005, just to renew your faith in
humanity and the possibility of a truly good time being had by all.
Now I can't guarantee it will be like today - but if it comes close it
will be worth your while.
The Onkaparinga District and all its citizens should be proud of their
input into a day that was stellar in many ways.
Festooned with orange and yellow balloons, more than 1000 of them
inflated dutifully from 6am today by local residents keen to embrace the
Tour and all of its potential, Willunga showed itself more than willing
to embrace the Tour and make the most of it.
Special congratulations go to the "Almost Free watermelon stand"
something that anyone under 12 will appreciate.
The town frolicked in perfect weather conditions made all the more
enjoyable by the excitement of the race and the local planning
surrounding the event.
Support entertainment included a free list package to die for,
especially for families. There was everything from all singing all
dancing live bands through to free fortune tellers face painters and
comedians, and a multicultural array comprising Aboriginal dance and
culture, Flamenco, South American instrumentals, belly dancing and music
and dance from the Pacific Islands and Africa.
Willunga had us whetting our whistles for the Womadelaide in February.
But it was the whole tone of this motivated community that was bound to
impress - friendly, lively and full of imagination - Willunga wins my
vote as top spot for the 2004 tour.
All I can say is next year - be there or be square - and by the way
every Saturday - the wonderful Willunga food market cooperative sets up
shop for one and all, showcasing local produce from regular to organic.
