The Jonker report - Greipel's grip tightens

January 22 2009

Goolwa was a sight for sore eyes today - a sea of blue and white jerseys on the backs of the almost 8,100 recreational riders who completed the Mutual Community Challenge - they were everywhere. Congratulations to all who took on the challenge.

Just think, when this event began 11 years ago, the first community challenge attracted about 600 riders. It just shows you that the elite sport does have the capacity to grow healthy community engagement - especially when it is managed as well as it is here.

So once the amateur riders had a break for some refreshments, their attendance swelled the crowds in Goolwa so that at most points around finish line the crowds were 40 to 50 deep. I don't know what the police estimates were today but it was big - maybe the biggest crowd this year.

And they were waiting with bated breath to see the outcome.

Hats off to David Kemp today -  his form at this tour has been brilliant and this ride was a great one in tough and very windy conditions which picked up even more as it came to the finish of the pro race.

And although he didn't win the jersey Kemp was my pick for classy aggression today. If he looks after himself tonight there is no reason why he can't get up and do it again tomorrow, his form looks that good.

What is troubling however is the lack of spark by so many of the other teams.

Team HTC-Columbia seems to have a stranglehold on this race and I am not sure why. We have other teams here who have the capacity to take it up to them but no-one seems to want to pick up the gauntlet.

It would make things much more exciting if they did.

Never mind - Team UniSA-Australia has been having a dash all week and they should be proud of their efforts.

The Willunga stage is traditionally a good one for Team UniSA - we have had some fabulous moments there over the years.

I expect tomorrow to be no different - if we can get two riders out in the break to back each other up we could see a great result.

Greipel has been quick to compliment his team for their efforts and apart from his obvious strength and skill as a rider, it is clear their disciplined teamwork is a key to his success. They look out for him. Speaking from many years of experience - the teamwork does make a difference.

Willunga is familiar turf for Tim Roe and he should make the most of that experience. With the right support he can shine here. And if Team HTC-Columbia are really tested on the hill - we just might send them off.

Griepel is still in a formidable position to win the tour overall but a stage win by Team-UniSA would be wonderful for all the supporters.
