Electronic and optical properties of doped titanium dioxide

Project duration: 2003-2006

Chief Investigators: Andrea Gerson, Mark Barnes, Bill Skinner *

Description:

Thin films of titanium dioxide, both in the anatase and the rutile forms, are produced using a physical vapour deposition DC magnetron sputtering chamber. Doping of these thin films with varius elements is then undertaken, to investigate the effect of doping on the optical properties of titanium dioxide.

Ab initio quantum chemical calculations are performed to determine the electronic structure of pure titanium dioxide, as well as the effect of impurities and concentration of impurities on the electronic properties.
