Welcome
ACeSSS (Applied Centre for Structural and Synchrotron Studies) was launched in 2004. Its mission is to provide structural, compositional and synchrotron studies (bulk and surface) of reactions and processing in the areas listed below.
Environmental systems
(including acid mine drainage control, waste and recycle control,
reaction mechanisms and modelling)
Mining and minerals assessment and separation
(including identification mineralogy, reaction modelling,. surface
chemical control in flotation and leaching)
Materials design and applications
(including performance design, structural and molecular modelling,
product optimisation, metallurgy, biomaterials, manufacturing)
Energy applications
(including alternative materials, sources and storage, materials
modelling and process optimisation)
The majority of the research and development in ACeSSS is supported by industry and the Australian Research Council and related to improvements in current processes or development of new processes or materials.
Projects in the Centre usually include three major aspects of the investigation:
- fundamental studies of the materials, processes and mechanisms of reaction
- diagnostic methods to identify structural and compositional factors limiting performance
- development of alternative or new processing to eliminate or reduce the performance limitations
In 2008, ACeSSS has 10 research staff, 10 postgraduates and 2 support staff working on projects totalling $2.0M. The Advisory Board is made up of 4 external and 3 internal committee members. More detailed information on Research Projects & Awards, Capabilities, Experimental Techniques, Projects, Publications, Current News and opportunities can be found in the other sections. If you have questions related to the research within the Centre, please contact one of the Centre members.
News :
ACeSSS’s Director, Professor Andrea Gerson was nominated for the
Excellence in Research Award for Commercialisation, Public Good and
Collaboration in the 2009 South Australian Science Excellence Awards. The
South Australian Science Excellence Awards recognise and reward EXCELLENCE
IN SCIENCE and acknowledge commitment and skill in raising public awareness
of science. These prestigious awards are seen as the premier science
showcase event in South Australia and aim to highlight the diversity of
scientific research, and facilitate a better understanding of the ways in
which research is linked to the development of new technologies and
products. They also highlight the relationship between research and
development and the ‘knowledge economy’.
The contribution our world class scientists make to the state has been
highlighted at the gala dinner for the 2009 South Australian Science
Excellence Awards.
Presented by His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, Governor of South
Australia, and Minister for Science & Information Economy, Michael O'Brien,
seven South Australians were recognised for the valuable contribution they
make to science within our State.
These awards showcase the best science in South Australia, with industry,
education and research gaining from being involved in such a significant
program of recognition and reward.
