Council of International Fellowship Visit
We
are delighted to report on the successful visit of six international social
workers undertaking an exchange through the
Council of International Fellowship,
Australia. The visitors from Austria,
Finland, Germany, Greece, India and Scotland greatly enjoyed their day and
the enhanced understanding they acquired of the Australian welfare system
and its history.
2007 Graduation Party
170 students graduated from the School of Social Work and Social Policy on 26 March 2007 at the Adelaide Festival Theatre. The School organised a graduation party for the graduates and their family and friends.
Alicia Charnstrom, graduated with a Degree of Bachelor of Social Work, is
congratulated by her four children and extended family members. Alicia has
successfully completed the program juggling full time study, full time work
and being a full time mother to her four kids. Well done.
Bonnie

Honours, will be heading off to Sudan, Africa to extend her social work
experience. She will be working with an International Non-Government

is very excited that Bonnie has landed with a fantastic opportunity to
explore her horizon.

International Night on 22 May 2007
We had fantastic food and interaction at the School's social event for international and local students on Tuesday 22 May 2007. About 30 students and staff members of the School of Social Work and Social Policy came together at the Magill Campus, with the aim of building strong international culture within the school. There were huge spread of food representing the various cultures and good exchange amongst the local and international students.
Learning Communities
Learning communities are small groups of students who meet outside of
class time, over coffee and food, to discuss their learning, their course
content and to assist each other in their learning. Our International
BSW students have formed a learning community, which was initiated by a
fourth year International student, Jocelyn Yim. The group is supported
by School staff and staff of the Learning Connection. Various course
coordinators join the group as needed. The group members feel that the
group has been important to their success in their studies. It both
provides information about course content and supports them by understanding
their anxieties and affirming their successes.
The School's first Indian social work student
The first of hopefully many more Indian social work students has just
completed his social work placement in Adelaide. Emmanuel Sumithran did his undergraduate degree in Accounting and Commerce and then his Master
of Social Work at Madras Christian College, Chennai, India. Over
the past 10 years about 70 students from the School of Social Work and
Social Policy have undertaken placements in India so we are pleased that
we can now begin to reciprocate. The School of Social Work and
Social Policy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the
College's Department of Social Work.
Emmanuel undertook his placement at Shopfront Youth Health Service in Salisbury. The differences in culture, social work practice and many other aspects of life in Australia have provided Emmanuel with a rich learning experience. Six of his colleagues in Chennai are hoping to follow him.
One of our students, Chantel Mardon and her family accommodated Emmanuel during his stay and the School of Social Work and Social Policy is very appreciative of their substantial support and the love they have shown Emmanuel. It is impossible for Indian social work students to come here without substantial support.
