Rehabilitation Counselling
Postgraduate studies in Rehabilitation Counselling at UniSA are designed to produce graduates, who work within an empowering framework with groups and individuals whose lives have been disrupted by injury and/or disability and/or disadvantage. The goal of the rehabilitation counsellor is to maximise independence by working within an interdisciplinary framework to enable people to reach their full potential personally and to enhance their career and employment opportunities.
The Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitation Counselling provides experienced rehabilitation practitioners entry to university rehabilitation counselling studies.
The Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling provides graduates from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity to develop understandings and skills relevant to professional practice as rehabilitation counsellors.
The Master of Rehabilitation Counselling provides opportunities for appropriate graduates to contribute to researching issues relevant to rehabilitation counselling in Australia society or within a broader international context. N.B. The Master of Rehabilitation Counselling will not be offered in 2008 whilst a review is being conducted.
The Rehabilitation Counselling programs will provide:
- advanced knowledge of and skills in rehabilitation, critically reflective practice and the sociology of work and disability
- development of sound interpersonal and communication skills
- knowledge of and skills in working with people from diverse backgrounds
- knowledge of and skills in the application of contemporary job placement frameworks

Who are the programs for?
The Rehabilitation Programs are designed for people already working within the area of rehabilitation counselling looking to upgrade their skills and knowledge and gain accredited qualifications as well as those with undergraduate qualifications from non-related disciplines who are seeking to enter the field of rehabilitation counselling. Students of this program should enjoy working with people and be able to value diversity.
The Graduate Certificate is designed for those without an undergraduate degree yet with significant experience in the field and offers an entry-level opportunity to university. The Graduate Diploma is designed for those with a recognised bachelor degree or equivalent not necessarily related to this area and wish to further their career into the area of Rehabilitation Counselling.
Your career
Students may already be employed in the industry and looking to enhance their career prospects or looking to make a career transition into rehabilitation counselling. Graduates of this program are highly sought after and there are excellent employment opportunities in South Australia and Australia. Students may find or enhance their employment opportunities across a wide range of areas including private and public organisations offering drug and alcohol programs, youth intervention programs, employee assistance programs, pain management programs, correctional facilities, hospitals, educational settings or corporate human resource departments as well as in consultancy and private practice and research and policy development.
Special features
These programs have been designed to meet the needs of students who have multiple responsibilities. Courses are scheduled in afternoon or evening classes and include some intensive classes. There are opportunities for a variety of field placement experiences where students can consolidate theoretical skills and apply them in a practice sense.
Course content is regularly reviewed to ensure that it is up-to-date and relevant to the needs of industry and clients. Teaching staff have relevant rehabilitation expertise and experience and guest industry lectures are invited to teach particular components of the programs.
This program provides students with exposure to industry networks and employers which assists to broaden their career opportunities.
UniSA's Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling is the only ASORC accredited diploma program in Rehabilitation Counselling offered in South Australia. The program is Commonwealth supported.
Entry requirements
Entry into the Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitation Counselling is available to those who provide the following with their application:
- a letter of support from an appropriate employer in the rehabilitation industry
- documented evidence of at least five years of relevant experience in rehabilitation work.
Entry into the Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling requires successful completion of a recognised bachelor degree or equivalent. Applicants who have completed the UniSA Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitation Counselling will also be eligible for entry. Selection is based on academic merit.
Entry into the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling requires successful completion of the UniSA Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling. Entry is available also to graduates of other Australian postgraduate rehabilitation counselling programs and to graduates of other similar recognised postgraduate programs. Selection will be based on academic merit.
