Field Education

Field Education is a significant component of the educational development of all future human service professionals. It represents up to  twenty five percent of the student’s undergraduate study and is critical to the ongoing pursuit of integrating academic understandings with practice decisions and activity.

The School’s approach to Field Education continues to evolve in response to changes in the human services field and the diverse circumstances in which organisations and human service professionals find themselves. Increasingly, the approach to Field Education is one of negotiated partnerships with organisations and human service professionals.

Field Education aims to provide a range of programs which focus upon particular areas of practice, policy or research, and within which negotiated placements are available to students.  For example: practice in Indigenous contexts, community health, cultural diversity, domestic violence, mental health, community development, and family services.

It is important to note that Field Education is undertaken during the third and fourth year of the Bachelor of Social Work program (or the fourth and fifth year for the double degree students) and the last year of the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) program. Students must complete prior course requirements before enrolling into the Field Education course.

It has also become increasingly important for postgraduate students to undertake Field Education studies as supervised practice is a significant component of the educational development of all human service professionals and critical to the integration of theory, values and skills taught in the classroom with the demands of practice in the field.
