Capitalisation
Use minimal capitals wherever possible - obvious
exceptions are at the beginnings of sentences and in proper nouns such
as names, places, groups and academic entities.
In UniSA marketing materials, we favour using minimal
capitals in headings and titles, provided they do not contain proper
nouns or other words that would typically require capitalisation.
Use upper case when referring to:
- a specific area within UniSA: e.g. The Division of Health
Sciences/School of Communication/Centre for Regional
Engagement/Campus Central BUT in three schools there
are...
- to a specific study period: e.g. In study period 1, you will
study… BUT Students will undertake their placement over two
study periods.
Use lower case when referring to:
- undergraduate or postgraduate awards generically: eg UniSA
offers more than 110 programs at bachelor degree level BUT
Stephen graduated with a Master of Education in 1999
- two or more UniSA divisions, schools or
units. This also applies to plural references to senior management:
eg UniSA’s four academic divisions are led by pro vice
chancellors…
- email and web addresses: eg karen.smith@abc.com.au.

Using the word 'university':
- Use University when it is part of a title – e.g. the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia
- Use the University if it is being used instead of the University of South Australia
- Use university when you are referring to universities as a concept or in a general way, or are using the
word as an adjective: e.g. a Queensland university, several universities, some university staff,
this university, university-wide, the university sector.
