Factors such as background and foreground quality, tone and lighting may affect the production value of a photograph.
Try to remove any unnecessary clutter such as drink bottles or papers from the shot. If they are not helping communicate your ideas, they can give your image an unpolished look. Try to ensure that lab coats or any clothing props are ironed and surfaces are cleaned where possible.

By cropping out the mess on the table (left image) you create a far more engaging and professional looking image (right).
Avoid problems with poor quality backgrounds by scouting out suitable locations prior to the photo shoot.

The background of the left image
has scratched glass and an unappealing streetscape, while the image
on the right features a modern clean background.

Avoid lines that intersect the subject - the lines intersecting the subject in the photo on the left were removed in the postproduction phase.
When selecting imagery to represent the University avoid old and outdated pictures. These images may feature clothing or décor specific to an era or perhaps have an outdated look and feel to them.
