Online CareerShop for school students open for business

by Vincent Ciccarello

CareerShopIn an Australian university first, UniSA has launched a special online portal, CareerShop to help students on their career journey.

UniSA didn’t just open its doors to some 12,000 high school students for its annual Open Day in August – it also opened a special online portal, CareerShop.

CareerShop allows secondary school students to create a personal, customised website with relevant and useful information about the study programs they may be interested in, details on prerequisites and Tertiary Entrance Ranks, as well as upcoming events, news and helpful links.

The website also features podcasts, vodcasts and interviews with students, graduates and lecturers, which cover career opportunities and job profiles.

UniSA’s Domestic Student Recruitment Manager, Darren McInnes says the portal’s aim is to help students make sense of the sometimes overwhelming amount of information available about tertiary study and careers.

"We recognised that, with so many different options available to them, students often aren’t sure where to begin to get career information," Mr McInnes said.

"CareerShop is a new and exciting dimension to their career development.

"It is essentially similar to a Facebook or MySpace site that students can tailor to suit their interests; where they can explore career possibilities and get access to information from professional organisations here and overseas.

"The site also provides opportunities for students to network with UniSA student ambassadors - a group of mentors that school-leavers can relate to."

While CareerShop is targeted at school-leavers, McInnes said work was underway on a version for career counsellors and another tailored to the adult undergraduate and postgraduate market.

"CareerShop brings together all of the information students need to consider when choosing a career and study path – and that applies to anyone thinking about coming to UniSA. We believe prospective students will find it an invaluable career decision-making tool."
