Mawson Lakes meets the world game
by Michèle Nardelli
There
wasn’t a Socceroo or Matilda in sight, there were no TV cameras, no
journalists assigned to cover the smooth moves of individual players, no
hooligans, no songs and no beer.
But there was a bit of argy-bargy with the umpire, some tough tumbles, frightful fakes, great goals, incredible misses and super saves and, all through, a very definite oooh and aaah from the crowd.
UniSA’s first indoor soccer tournament planned with great care by a group of international students at Mawson Lakes was a resounding success.
Organisers from Network Mawson Lakes, a group established to introduce and engage students with the local community and the community with the University, say more than 240 people attended over the two-day tournament.
Nine teams competed including one from the Mawson Lakes community, all-student teams, staff and student combos with the occasional relative filling in at the last minute.
Champion team (Team 9) had players drawn mainly from civil aviation.
Lakes Edge Community Church sponsored a barbecue and drinks for the two days and provided trophies for the event. A local sports massage provider was on hand to soothe tightened muscles and City of Salisbury Mayor, Tony Zappia made the closing speech and presentations.
