Scholarship helps get the marketing edge

Kellie Loveless and Jana FielkeFor two Ehrenberg Scholarship winners, the marketing began even before they started university.

This year two students demonstrated such outstanding qualities that the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute decided to award the Ehrenberg Scholarship for marketing to both.

Kellie Loveless and Jana Fielke are the recipients of the prestigious award, named after one of the great marketing scientists, Professor Andrew Ehrenberg, whose work has had a major influence on the research and teaching of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute.

The Ehrenberg Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding student enrolled in the Bachelor of Management (Marketing) program who gained a tertiary entrance rank of 95 or more. Since its inception in 2001, the scholarship has been awarded to nine outstanding students.

Loveless and Fielke impressed the interview panel with the strength of their academic achievement and extracurricular activities.

As head prefect of St Peter’s Collegiate Girls’ School, Loveless won the Julie Hart Cup for most outstanding girl. She excelled at maths, English and science and participated in external competitions in these areas. In 2005, she took part in the Young Achievers program and last year she participated in the Global Young Leaders Conference in Europe.

Loveless said that receiving the scholarship is a great incentive to achieve academic excellence in order to maintain the prestige and image of the award.

"Besides the substantial financial benefits this scholarship has to offer, it has already made me aware of the vast possibilities available in the future and has given me an insight to what goes on behind the scenes at the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute," she said.

Fielke won the Kroeger Memorial Award for outstanding academic and extracurricular achievement at Loxton High School, where she was prefect in charge of public affairs. A high achiever in maths, English and business, Fielke also represented Loxton and the Riverland in a number of sporting competitions including basketball, netball and volleyball. She said the marketing degree appealed to her because the field has future potential, enabling graduates to pursue numerous career options.

"The scholarship will enable me to gain an in-depth insight into marketing and the diverse avenues I will be able to take in this field while also putting me in contact with people who have a lot of knowledge and experience in marketing," Fielke said.
