Voluntary student unionism update

studentsThe UniSA Students Association and the University Council have agreed on arrangements for student services and representation following the Federal Government's legislation abolishing compulsory student services and amenities fees.

The University has agreed to provide the Association with financial support from July 1 this year for continuing student representation, to provide support and to maintain student life activities including sport and recreation groups, cultural activities and communications.

The Association will continue to operate the cafeterias and bars at the metropolitan campuses until December 31, with the exception of the City West Bar, which will close on July 1. A new licensed coffee shop located on Fenn Place at City West from late July will partly fill the void created by the closure. The Centre for Regional Engagement will arrange for services at the Whyalla campus from July 1. While prices at cafeterias and bars will increase slightly, they will remain competitive with off-campus prices.

All students, except transnational, may choose to be members of the Association without any fee payment. Membership allows participation in student representative elections. Non-members will still have access to any of its services funded by the University.

The University Council has approved the Association's recommended changes to its constitution including membership arrangements and a new Association Council structure.

A referendum to endorse the changes to the Constitution will be held from June 5 to 9.
