Architecture roadshow
by Vincent Ciccarello
Fourth
year architecture student Ben Luppino plans to visit some of Australia’s
cutting edge architecture projects during a study tour funded by a $2000
DesignInc Travelling Scholarship in Sustainable Architecture. Luppino
won the grant for his studio design of a Sustainable Nature Museum and
Education Centre.
"The scholarship is based on sustainability and architecture of the future," Luppino said. "I focused on the social elements of sustainability in my design – looking at the whole building as a tool to educate primary and secondary school students about making sustainable living a part of everyday life."
SA Museum presented the nature museum design brief as a discovery centre with interpretive and interactive displays. But Luppino’s design also had to take account of technical aspects such as ventilation, cooling, day lighting, sun shading and heat loading.
"I was able to incorporate all of the technical elements we learned this semester and allow them to govern the design itself," he said. "Every semester you try to add something new from all the things you’ve learnt, adding another layer to the design."
Among Luppino’s must sees is DesignInc’s new Council House 2 building in Melbourne, classed a world leader in sustainable design.
